doing stuff, thinking thoughts

Being completely un-Senegalese and sitting in a café downtown (Times Café), trying to figure out my summer plans, which are going quite badly. I knew this would happen — trying to figure out research plans while in a place completely removed from Harvard’s readily accessible libraries, professors, and advisors is IMPOSSIBLE, especially since any academia that my brain can handle is geared towards health policy research and not evolutionary biology. As much as I love what I study at school, telling people I study evolution makes me feel a bit out of place, especially since everyone else is here to learn about development, international affairs, colonialism, African politics, etc.

Anyway, the sweet taste of a foamy latté is such a nice change from the sugary ataaya and café touba I drink daily. No added sugar necessary — the foam does the trick. It’s definitely a splurge item, but much-needed to accompany the stress of figuring out the next few years of my life. Life is great here, but once in a while a little taste of home is a comfort that goes a long way.

Love from a completely different side of Dakar (the only place without sandy streets),
